Cottfield Group has been operating in Uganda since 2004 when we were invited to invest in the country by the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA). We are among the largest investors in Uganda's agri-processing sector, and the largest such enterprise in the Bukedi Sub-Region of Eastern Uganda. At our premises in Kibuku District, we operate the most modern cotton ginnery in the country since 2006, and a complete oil mill with a refinery and a solvent extraction plant – one of only 5 such plants in East Africa – since 2011.
Our processing capacity is 120 tons of cotton or sunflower seed per day. Seed is processed into fully refined edible oil and high-protein oilseed cake/meal. Since 2012, we have pioneered production of pelleted animal feeds in Uganda; pellets are easy to handle, minimize wastage, are immune to infestation, reduce dust and prevent separation of ingredients.
Since 2006, we have undertaken a wide range of agricultural production support activities, such as provision of extension services to farmers, opening of land for cultivation and distribution of agricultural inputs on zero-interest credit terms. The Group has caused and facilitated establishment of cotton producers' associations in Eastern and Western Uganda, each with over 3,000 members. We also promote high-yielding sunflower and soybean varieties among the farmers of Eastern Uganda and support other agriculture-related activities such as production, marketing and export of the region's indigenous fruits: mango and jackfruit.
We employ up to 300 workers during the harvest season and provide a source of income to tens of thousands of farming households across Uganda and in the Eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Mahagi District).
The Group is also involved in the transportation business. Our fleet of heavy trucks is capable of delivering our products across East Africa and we have been providing transportation services to a wide variety of customers.
