COTTFIELD GROUP JOINS SOYBEAN INNOVATION LAB (SIL) VARIETY AND INPUT OMISSION TRIALS

Nov 6, 2020 by Cottfield Group

In an effort to support oilseed farmers of Eastern Uganda, Cottfield Group has joined Soybean Innovation Lab, a USAID-supported program dedicated to soybean research for development, as a private sector partner.

The Group is taking part in two SIL programs: Pan-African Soybean Variety Trials (PAT) which fast-track the introduction and testing of commercial soybean varieties sourced from across the world to provide farmers and processors with access to a broader selection of seed; and SMART Farms that provide soybean producers with evidence-based technical guidance on agronomics and economics of soybean production.

In Q1 2020, the Group completed an evaluation trial of soybean varieties already available in Uganda which aimed to assess their performance under the real-life farming conditions of Eastern Uganda's Bukedi Region. Maksoy 6N, a variety developed and produced by Makerere University (Uganda), was found to have the highest yield performance as well as reasonable drought tolerance, and was earmarked for promotion among oilseed farmers in Bukedi.

In Q3 2020, the Group's first SMART Farm input omission trial was completed. The trial produced valuable agronomic data which will be used for guidance of soybean farmers and extension workers. It also provided directions for future research into ways of increasing smallholder soybean yields.

Rollout of certified soybean seed to farmers, in combination with evidence-based input bundles and extension programs designed specifically for Bukedi, is planned for 2021.
